MUMBAI:The state assembly’s bill to hike salaries of ministers and legislators has caused an uproar among unaided schools in Mumbai. They have written to lawmakers demanding their long overdue grants, before the MLAs increase their own salaries.

Around 1,600 unaided schools, which were promised 20 per cent aid in June, complained that the government is yet to give them written confirmation of it.

The aid will benefit 9,247 teachers and is likely to cost the government an amount of Rs 163 crore a year. “We were supposed to receive the amount within 21 days. We have passed that deadline but the government has not given us an update,” said Prashant Redij, who is the spokesperson of the Maharashtra Permanently Unaided Schools Association.
