MUMBAI: A senior citizen died of suffocation, while another man and a nine-month-old baby were injured after the compressor of an air-conditioning (AC) unit exploded after short circuit in Vasai around 4am on Monday.

The blast occurred in flat 203, A wing of Savio Apartment, Evershine City, Vasai (east). Although the residents of the flat managed to escape on time, two members of the family, 40-year-old Uday Mohan Kanche and a nine-month-old baby had to be admitted in the ICU of a hospital as they had inhaled a lot of smoke. The fire then spread to floor above where 62-year-old Jayant Deshkar suffocated to death.
The fire was spotted by the members of the neighbouring society who alerted the guards. Also, an 11-year-old resident, Mahir Mistry, went along ringing the bells of all the flats to alert them about the fire. With the security guards and Mistry’s alert, the residents were evacuated safely from the building. The fire brigade from Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation also rushed to the spot and they suspect that a short circuit may have caused the AC to explode.
