12 fined, 50 let off with warning

On Monday, the fourth day of anti-jaywalking drive, being held by the Mumbai Traffic Police in conjunction with Hindustan Times, the police fined 12 people. Fifty others were let off with a warning.

But the drive seems to have little effect as students and office-goers continued to break the rules.

Those caught continued to bring up the same issue — a board should be put up stating that using the subway is compulsory.

Some others complained that they didn’t know what jaywalking was.

Many of them came up with different excuses or argued with the police and walked away.

“I am going to the doctor,” said Suresh Tiwari (45), a tanker driver, and left without even leaving his name at the register, while the police were not looking.

A woman refused to pay the fine and walked away.
