The Directorate of technical education (DTE) has thus asked the state government to allow a fourth CAP round to fill the vacant seats.

While the first round saw around 90,000 students confirm seats, the second round of allotment saw 80,000 students take admission.

Out of the 1.62 lakh seats available across the state, only 1.55 lakh have been filled.

“We have sent a proposal to the state government to conduct a fourth round, the decision for which will be taken after the third round ends," said Dayananad Meshram, Joint Director, DTE.

The fourth round, Meshram said, will be conducted for students who have not been allotted a single seat or have had to forfeit admission due to some reason, thus giving them a second chance for admission.

"Currently there are over 350 engineering colleges in the state and fewer students are opting for them since most of them want to take admission in IITs and NITs. Also, most of the vacant seats are from rural areas of the state as most students prefer to come to bigger cities to pursue technical courses. This has triggered the problem of vacant seats", said a senior DTE official.

In May 20213, the All India Council for Technical Education had approved 18,000 more engineering seats in the state.

“The AICTE needs to curb the high number of new colleges springing up. This will help reduce the problem of vacant seats,” said Meshram.
