Stockbroker Meet Brambhatt purportedly hatched the story with two of his friends, who have also been detained.

Brambhatt had a habit of buying lottery tickets, said the police. “He had mortgaged his gold chain to buy a lottery ticket. His parents were unaware about Meet’s habit,” said investigating officer R. Kasbe of Goregaon police station.

Brambhatt had claimed he had withdrawn Rs 40,000 from an ATM near Goregaon station on Saturday evening and then met his girlfriend behind Cinemax on SV Road.

He claimed three men forced him into a Maruti van and drove him around Malad and Goregaon. He claimed he was gagged, blindfolded and his hands tied. He said he was dropped off after they took his money and chain. The police registered a case of kidnapping and robbery. “But we found that Brambhatt had withdrawn Rs 15,000 on Friday and Rs 25,000 on Saturday. This did not corroborate with his story,” said Kasbe.

“Brambhatt called his friends, who tied his hands and gagged him,” said Kasbe.

He said as the complainant himself is the accused, they will produce him in court and after the magistrate’s orders they register a case against the three and arrest them for registering a false complaint.
