Taking a tough stance against schools violating norms, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) education department wants to de-recognise two unaided English medium schools in Chembur.
The education department has made a proposal to the education committee to de-recognise the affiliation of Holy Family High School and Our Lady of Perpetual Succour (OLPS) School with the BMC. According to the education officers, these schools have been served at least three notices asking them to rectify violations.
For the primary section of any state board school in the city to function, it needs to be recognised by the BMC. If recognition is withdrawn, the school has to shut down classes.
In the case of OLPS, the civic body has issued a notice to them in September after Sheila D’Mello a former headmistress was demoted by the school management in July without a valid reason.
“D’Mello filed a complaint with us. The education officer then gave her and school authorities a hearing but the school didn’t give satisfactory answers for the demotion,” said a senior education officer. After the school failed to respond to the September notice, the BMC proposed to de-recognise it. “There were many things going wrong at the school and I had to do something about it,” said D’Mello.
Recently, the school was also served notice after 150 primary students were made to sit outside the principal’s office as their parents had not paid the fees. Parents stormed the school and pointed out that a majority of students had paid their fees. It was later found that the mistake had occurred due to technical errors in the school accounts department.

{{/usCountry}}Raja Chougule, corporator of Chembur and member of the education committee, said there were a lot ot of complaints against the two schools.
“The BMC doesn’t revoke affiliation without any reason. They give the school ample opportunity to rectify mistakes,” Chougule said. Senior BMC officials also said that Holy Family School didn’t have a headmaster for the last 10 years.
“Everytime we tell them to appoint one they would come up with excuses,” the official said.
These two proposals will be tabled before the civic education committee, scheduled for the month-end. Once the committee clears the proposal, it will be sent to the civic general body for approval. “The students of the primary sections will suffer but we will shift them to other schools nearby,” the civic official said.
