Mumbai Commissioner of Police D. Sivanandhan on Monday announced a special award for two investigating teams for their skillful investigation of cases.
He also announced that the award will now be conferred to the best detection team/s every month.
“This will help motivate the force and consequently improve performance,” said Sivanandhan.
The first detection was in the murder case of a housewife at Kalachowkie in October 2009. The murderer turned out to be her businessman husband. The case was detected by Unit 2 of the Crime Branch.
Initially, it was thought that Beena Dedia (39) had been killed by two chain-snatchers when she refused to part with her earrings during a morning walk with her husband.
More than 600 chain snatchers were questioned in the case for over three months.
The police, during investigation, learnt that the murder was planned by her husband in connivance with one of his relatives with whom he was allegedly having an extra martial affair and therefore wanted to get rid of Beena.
In the second case, a team from Vinoba Bhave police station in May 2009 arrested a man for allegedly murdering his ragpicker wife. The police had started with practically no clue or evidence, a police official said, requesting anonymity for lack of authorisation to speak with the media.
