A picnic at Juhu beach to enjoy the last day of their vacation proved fatal for two teenagers from Andheri (East) on Sunday. The boys — Royston D’Cruz (16) and Alex Pandey (17) — drowned after they went swimming into the choppy sea during high tide.

The youngsters were part of a group of 10 friends, all from Chakala. The incident took place around 10 am even as their friends watched helplessly.
Their bodies are yet to be recovered as the rough sea is hampering search operations.
The teens were in a part of the beach that had no lifeguard at that point. “We have boards warning visitors to stay away from the sea as the tide is high. Ten lifeguards were on the beach,” said Neville David, a lifeguard.
So far, in 2010, there have been eight drowning deaths in the city. Known to be relatively safe, for the last 18 months there had been no incidents in Juhu.
