20% water cut announced, but in some areas it is 50%: Mumbai corporators

Criticising the BMC over disparity in implementing water cuts, corporators said some parts of Mumbai are facing as much a 50% water cuts. They pointed out that people from areas such as Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Bhandup, Andheri and Bandra are facing water problems since the 20% cut was announced.

Shiv Sena corporator and standing committee member Ramakant Rahate demanded an alternate day water supply system to conserve water on Wednesday.

“It is important that the BMC conserve water and come up with an alternate day water supply system in the city,” he said.

Pravin Chheda, Congress corporator, said, “There has been no water supply for the past three days at several areas in Ghatkopar. The civic officials have not been opening water vaults. The BMC should stop fooling the citizens and make their stand on water cut clear, rather than announcing 20% and implementing 50% cut.”

Standing committee members also slammed the administration for not taking active water conservation measures.

Sandeep Deshpande, MNS group leader, said, “The administration is not serious about rain water harvesting. They do not have the details about structures with rain water harvesting. The revival of ringwells and borewells is also a farce.”
