The Mumbai police crime branch traced and arrested a 53-year-old man, allegedly involved in a 1990 murder case on Friday night.
He had managed to evade the long arm of the law for two decades after he had come out on bail . The accused, at the time, worked as an associate of a local gangster Mangesh Pawar, who was the trusted aide of India’s most wanted gangster, Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar.
The accused, Nadeem Gulab Rasool Mistry, was traced to Akota in Vadodara, Gujarat.
The arrest is part of a special drive initiated by the crime branch chief, additional director general (ADG) Atulchandra Kulkarni for nabbing the wanted and absconding accused involved in serious crimes and those who have remained untraced for several years.
After the crime branch received information, a team of the crime branch under deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Mohankumar Dhaikar, a special team led by unit IX head, police inspector (PI) Mahesh Desai and PI Padvi nabbed Mistry and constables Pednekar and Sawant
Mistry was an associate of gangster Mangesh Pawar who ran a drug syndicate for Dawood. Mistry was being traced for his alleged role in a murder case of a person named Haji. The murder had occurred in Bandra (West) where the accused had come in a car and fled after shooting dead Haji. Mistry had helped Pawar with his car and had also accompanied him.
A crime branch official requesting anonymity said, “Pawar was a trusted aide of Kaskar back then. Mistry was an associate of Pawar and one Pillu Khan. Khan was very close to Kaskar and was infamous for running a drug syndicate along with Pawar. Both evaded arrest by fleeing the country. They later split from Dawood’s gang and were bumped off overseas during the gang war.” According to sources, Mistry was arrested in the case soon after but came out on bail and had gone into hiding since. The accused was traced on Friday. He was produced before a court and sent to judicial custody. Apart from this murder case, Mistry has a case of assault against him.
