It could be Mumbai's costliest road yet. The Brihan-mumbai Municipal Corporation wants to spend over Rs21 crore to rebuild a merely 1.8-km-long stretch on Napean Sea Road in south Mumbai.
This means an expenditure of more than Rs10 crore for a kilometer, when, normally, the money spent for road-building per km is not in excess of Rs4 crore. So the total amount sought to be spent on the stretch could actually help rebuild 5 km of roads across the city.
The stretch, from St Stephen Church near Kemp's Corner to J Mehta Road, is used by a number of VIPs and ministers as it leads up to Malabar Hill, where bungalows of ministers are situated.
The civic body had drawn a lot of flak for the bad condition of the road last monsoon and ministers had even raised the issue in cabinet meetings. City guardian minister Jayant Patil had personally inspected the road and directed the BMC to improve its condition.
The proposal to rebuild the road will be discussed at the civic standing committee meeting on Thursday. According to the proposal, the road will be given a new surface by using 'mechanised mastic asphalt technology', which is usually used at junctions.
