To add to this, the constables failed to take any action against unidentified miscreants who allegedly threw bottles at the train’s windows.

Railway police (GRP) Commissioner Tukaram Chavan has ordered an inquiry into the entire episode to identify the errant policemen for initiating action.

Sonu Shelar (26), a media professional, one of those present in the compartment, said that the incident occurred in the last Virar-bound train that left Churchgate station at 1 am. She approached the railway police commissioner on Friday, seeking action.

Recollecting the sequence of events, Shelar said that one constable who was on duty was standing at the footboard, while three others were seated in the compartment. The trio was passing lewd remarks against a group of women sitting in one of the corners.

The complainant said as the train was nearing Santacruz station, a glass bottle hit the window.

“We immediately shut down the iron shutter and expected the police personnel to present inside to help us, but they did not. In fact they continued with their misbehaviour,” Shelar added.

“Five minutes later, another bottle was thrown in the same direction when the train passed Vile Parle and the three constables still did not pay any heed to it,” continued the complainant.

The three police constables then alighted at Andheri railway station, Shelar said.

“We will be initiating an enquiry and suitable action will be taken against the erring constables,” said Railway police commissioner Tukaram Chavan.
