3 killed in car, truck collision on highway

Three people were killed in an accident at Mahad, around 160 km from Mumbai, on the Mumbai-Goa highway on Sunday morning when a car collided with a truck. One more person travelling in the car has suffered multiple fractures, reports HT Correspondent.

According to the Mahad police, Nandhkishore Khot (43), Mahesh Oak (38), Shekhar Rege (36) from Mumbai and Mohan Oak (38), a resident of Palghar, were in a Maruti Swift, on their way back to Mumbai after attending a pre-wedding ritual of a cousin at Vahur, a village near Mahad.

The police said that Rege, who was driving, tried to overtake a truck from the wrong side when he lost control, jumped lanes and collided with another truck coming from the opposite direction.

The Mahad police rushed the victims to Thakur hospital at Khopoli where Mahesh, Rege and Mohan were declared dead on arrival.

Khot, who had suffered fractures on his right knee, is recuperating at the hospital.

“The families of the dead arrived at the village in the afternoon to conduct the last rites,” said constable Rahul Gaekwad.

“For several months we have been demanding the broadening of the highway,” said Ramesh Patil, a local resident.

Rajesh Bansode, superintendent of police (Highway), said: “Most accidents on this stretch occur due to overtaking and since there are only two lanes, the vehicles lose control. We are trying to broaden the highway.”

“The work for a four-lane highway has been on since last month,” Bansode said.
