A 30-year-old wealth manager employed with a private bank hanged herself at her Dadar residence on Sunday afternoon, allegedly following harassment by her in-laws.

The Matunga police registered a case of abetting suicide and cruelty against Komal Chheda’s husband and in-laws, based on a complaint by her father. Following the complaint, the police arrested Komal’s husband Ruchir, 30, a software engineer, and her mother-in-law Neeru, 62, late Sunday night, while her father-in-law Mahendra Chheda has not been arrested yet, the Matunga police said.

On Sunday afternoon around 2pm, Ruchir, who had a love marriage with Komal three years ago, allegedly found her hanging from the ceiling by her dupatta in their fourth floor flat in Laxmi Sadan building, Dadar (West). The Chheda family then contacted Komal’s father and brother who live close by.

Speaking to HT, Dr Rushabh Dedhia, Komal’s brother said, “The Chhedas found my sister hanging around 2pm, but they called us only around 2.45pm. Both my father and I are doctors and could have reached the Chhedas’ residence within 10 minutes. By the time we reached, they had taken down my sister’s body. We are awaiting the post mortem report that will clarify the cause of death.” No suicide note was found in the room.

Inspector D Gaikwad from Matunga police station said, “Komal’s father alleged that she had informed them she was being physically and mentally harassed by her husband and in-laws following which we registered a case under relevant sections of the IPC.”

Ruchir and his mother Neeru have been remanded in police custody till April 21.
