According to the police, Mahesh, a resident of Amar Nagar society in Sasmira Marg, Worli, had gone to Banganga with his brother to perform the last rites of their father.

At 12 noon, when Shetty went into the water to wash a cloth, he slipped after stepping on some algae that had grown over the steps.

“Shetty fell into the water and started shouting for help as he did not know how to swim. His brother dived into the water to save him, but he, too, did not know to swim. Both began to drown, but Mahesh went under within minutes. Narendra was rescued by locals who rushed to help the brothers,” said PSI Vishwas Kashyup, from Malabar Hill police station.
