A Thane-based family donated the kidneys of a relative, who was declared brain dead at Fortis Hospital, Mulund on Friday. While one kidney was transplanted into a 45-year-old renal failure patient at Fortis Hospital, the other was transplanted into a 40-year-old renal failure patient at Bombay Hospital, Marine Lines.

Both the transplant surgeries took place on Saturday morning.

Relatives of a 58-year-old brain-dead patient from Jaslok Hospital donated his liver which was transplanted into a 55-year old patient on Friday night.

“We are expecting organ donations to increase,” said Dr Sujata Patwardhan, secretary, Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC), which is responsible for allocating cadaver organs and creating awareness about organ donation.

This week, the government issued a government resolution allowing centres not registered for organ transplants to retrieve organs if they have an operation theatre and intensive care unit (ICU).
