4th LGBT march for freedom on January 28

The city’s queer community is gearing up for the fourth annual Queer Azaadi March, which will be held on January 28.

A week preceding the march, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community will also take part in a flashmob at the Carter Road promenade in Bandra and a picture contest, which are being organised for the first time.

“This year, we have received tremendous support even from the non-queer community. For the past three years, the motive behind the march was mainly to fight homophobia,” said Harish Iyer, gay rights activist. “This year, we intend to celebrate pride and reinforce the message of equal rights and acceptance,” he added.

While the march will be organised along the same route from August Kranti Maidan to Girgaum Chowpatty, venues for the activities planned during the Pride week (starting on January 21) are yet to be finalised.

“More than 150 queer and non-queer community members have already started rehearsing for the flashmob, which will be organised along the Carter Road promenade,” said Pallav Patankar from the Queer Azaadi March committee. “The flashmob will be a holistic integrated effort to gather more support,” he added. The group will dance to the tunes of Sadda Haq (Rockstar) and Maa Da Laadla (Dostana).
