The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had declared the building, Gopal Bhuvan, ‘dangerous’ in 2010. All other tenants in the building had vacated the flats after the receipt of the notice from the civic body, except the deceased, Chandrakant Sanghavi.

The incident took place at 6.55am. Sanghavi was an electrician by profession and was living alone in room number four on the first floor of the building. “This was a dilapidated structure and the tenants in the buildings were already informed about it. He was the only person who was inside the building when it fell,” said Milind Vibhute, ward officer, P-North ward.

Five fire engines were rushed to the spot. “He was taken to Bhagwati hospital where he was declared dead at arrival. We have registered a case of accidental death,” said Avinash Jadhav, senior inspector, Malad police station.

Since 2005 around 151 people have died due to building collapse across Mumbai during monsoon, while 472 have been injured. This year, the civic body had identified 929 dilapidated buildings across the city before monsoon. The highest numbers of dilapidated buildings have been identified in South Mumbai.
