A seven-year-old boy drowned in the swimming pool of a plush residential complex at Oshiwara on Saturday.
The police suspect that the boy, Vyom Sah, had squeezed through the space between the rods of steel railing around the pool in the afternoon.
According to the police, Vyom, a Class 3 student, and his family had recently come to the city from Baroda to attend a wedding. They were staying with a relative, Vijay Mehta, at Indra Darshan (phase 2) housing society on New Link Road, Andheri (West).
Around 12.15pm on Saturday, Vyom left the second-floor apartment without informing his parents. “He went to the swimming pool, took off his clothes, and jumped into the five-foot deep water,” said Dilip Rupawate, senior inspector, Oshiwara police station. “The child did not know swimming and drowned immediately. Another resident saw his body floating in the pool and informed the security guards.”
Vyom was taken to Cooper hospital, but was declared dead at admission, said Rupawate.
According to Rupawate, the pool is open from 9am to 11am. “As there is no instructor present in the afternoon, a steel railing is placed around the pool to prevent people from entering the water,” said Rupawate, adding, “Because he was a small boy, Vyas entered the pool through the gap between the rods.”
