The Navi Mumbai police detained eight people in connection with the shootout on Sunday, in which Bhaskar Dattu Kachre, 42, a sub-inspector posted at Taloja jail was injured. Though the police are tight-lipped about the motive, top sources said Kachre's action a week ago against some jail inmates could be the reason behind the incident.

Senior police inspector of Kharghar police station, Kiran Patil said, "We are questioning the eight people. I cannot say anymore at the moment." He, however, confirmed that all eight were from the Vikhe Deshmukh gang. Deshmukh is a notorious extortionist lodged in Taloja jail.
Navi Mumbai police commissioner AK Sharma said, "A week ago Kachre had objected to the food that comes from outside for some MCOCA inmates, and to the use of mobile phones inside jail. This attack on him could be reprisal for that."
