They were made to pay Rs 100 each as a fine for the offence. Senior traffic officers have also asked the police station in-charge to ensure their subordinates do not flout the rules.

The drive against helmetless bikers is top priority for the city traffic police because of the rise in fatalities involving them, officers said. Traffic police officers have been conducting surprise checks in the city ‘to bring about discipline among the motorists’.

“While our drive against motorists has been going on for a few months now, we have taken strict action against policemen, who blatantly flout traffic rules. We have also alerted senior inspectors of every police station to brief their staff on the importance of riding with helmets,” said BK Upadhyay, joint commissioner of police, traffic.

The traffic police have penalised 2,51,784 bikers for riding without helmets (till November this year) with a record 69,668 cases registered since the initiative was started in September.
