Adults think the city is unsafe for children, and children between 10 and 15 years of age don’t feel safe in Mumbai, reveals a yet-to-be-published survey of 1.04 lakh Mumbaiites conducted by the non-profit group Pratham.

Of the 70,000 children surveyed, 90% felt the city was unsafe for them; overall, 89% people shared the opinion.
Among the various reasons people felt the city was unsafe for children, 79% respondents said it was because of the increase in crimes against women and children, such as murder, abduction and abuse, while 11% said road accidents, the dearth of police personnel to deal with child-related cases and exposure to Internet and television were making the city more unsafe for youngsters.
Of the total respondents surveyed between January 2 and 9, 66% were school children, 5% college students, 1% teachers, 27% community members and 1% government officials.
“The result is shocking,” said Kishor Bhamre, assistant director, Pratham Council for Vulne-rable Children. “We didn’t think so many people felt the city was unsafe for children. It may be a contextual finding, given the rise in incidents of crime against women and children.”
