Police investigation into the case of Nikhil Gatagat, the engineering student from Latur who claimed to have been kidnapped, revealed that Gatagat had lied to the police and had attempted suicide.

Only July 7, Gatagat was rescued from Vashi creek by fishermen who spotted him drowning. After being rescued, he claimed that he had been abducted by an auto driver and another person and thrown off the bridge.
While the police had initially registered a case against unknown persons based on Gatagat's statements, parallel investigation revealed that he had attempted suicide over his poor performance in exams.
On further questioning, Gatagat admitted to police that he had thrown his belongings into Vashi creek and jumped into the water, fearing his parents' reaction to his failing marks in engineering exams. Police are yet to register a case against Gatagat.
