A day after their arrests, four of the accused in the Adarsh case were remanded in police custody on Thursday by the special CBI court. These include suspended IAS officer and former Mumbai collector Pradeep Vyas, Major General (retd) TK Kaul, Major General (retd) AR Kumar and KL Gidwani, former MLC and a promoter of Adarsh society.
Vyas, Kumar and Kaul are in police custody till March 31, while Gidwani’s is till March 26 as he had been arrested earlier and has been in police custody for 10 days. For allegedly bribing a CBI retainer counsel to dilute the probe.
In its remand application, the CBI said Vyas had misled Parliament by not conveying the defence department’s warning that the building may pose a threat to defence areas and also recommended some persons for membership of the society. Vyas’ wife was given membership as a reward, the CBI said.
About Kumar’s role, the CBI has alleged that he conspired with the other accused and issued a No Objection Certificate for development of the plot, which was in possession of the Army.
The CBI has alleged that Kaul gave a false reply to the Lok Sabha question that the land allotted to Adarsh was never with the Army. Gidwani, the CBI alleged, pursued the state authority for allotment of land to Adarsh and state officials for allotment of BEST plot FSI to Adarsh. He has three flats in the society, the CBI said.
