Ashraf Husain (26) was earlier a member of an anti-piracy agency who would keep vigil on the piracy business.

Husain was arrested on Monday, allegedly for being involved in a film piracy racket.

Husain had worked as an official with Jai Sri Krishna, an agency dealing in prevention of video piracy, before entering the piracy business.

“Husain learnt the functioning of the piracy business in his stint at the anti-piracy agency and was well aware of the loopholes in the system,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria.

The police said before crossing to the other side of the law, Husain studied the piracy syndicate from close quarters.

“He had earlier worked with someone else, and that’s how he came in contact with Asif,” said Maria. Asif (last name not given) is one of the distributors from Karachi wanted in the case.

On Thursday, the investigators seized Rs 3 lakh from the bank account of Rajesh Chowdhary, the associate vice-president of UFO Moviez.

“We told them about the loopholes we came across during the investigation,” said Maria. “The film industry people will have to first keep their own house in order.”
