The minister also said that they should be more sensitive about the issue.

“A robbery takes precedence over gender detection which finds itself on the lowest priority level,” Patil wrote.

Citing examples from the society being equally responsible, Patil wrote that the same people who considered women as the ‘goddess of power’ treat ‘birth of a girl as a kind of catastrophe’.

“As per the Human Development Report, 2002, published by the state government, 84 per cent women are of the opinion that they should have one son at least. With the help of modern technology, many pregnant women, their relatives and few doctors (I am not blaming all the doctors) in collusion and illegally perform gender detection tests and then abort the female foetus,” he wrote.

He refers to this as a ‘nexus’ between ‘educated and intelligent, the affluent class and some skilled doctors’.

“I think we need to start a movement to mobilise people in this direction… The doctors who are a part of this shameful act should be punished and the medical council should cancel their licence to practice for the rest of their life,” Patil wrote.
