Actor seeks discharge in abetment to suicide case

Bhatia has contended in her petition filed in the Bombay high court, that there was neither any direct nor any circumstantial evidence against her.

“In the entire charge sheet, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has not made any allegation, which said she intended or engineered Singh’s suicide,” her petition states.

The CBI, on the other hand, maintained that prima facie the case was made out against Bhatia for abetting suicide. The CBI contended that the evidence against Bhatia could not be evaluated at this stage, especially when the trial has begun.

“Probity of the witness statements can not be looked into at this stage,” said MV Lad, the CBI officer investigating the case in his affidavit in reply to Bhatia’s petition seeking discharge.

Singh, hanged himself from a fan in his flat at Windermere Society in Lokhandwala Complex on February 6, 2008. Bhatia was present in his flat when the incident occurred.

She maintained that she had gone to the bathroom when Singh took the drastic step.

Bhatia’s plea will come up for further hearing on April 26, CBI counsel Mandar Goswami said.
