The police have arrested a fraudster who, along with his friends, was allegedly running a fake admission racket.
Mohammed Ismail Khan, 28, has been held for duping a Delhi-based woman to the tune of Rs 12.5 lakh by promising to get her son admitted in a dental college in Ahmednagar.
Khan, along with Ati-Ur-Rehman alias Mashion Patel, 32, ran the Oasis Management Services on the 30th floor of the World Trade Center. They had advertised in leading newspapers claiming that they could get admissions for students in colleges anywhere in the country. The victim, Neelam Sahani, 49, called the duo seeking admission for her son. They asked her to come to Mumbai and demanded Rs 12.5 lakh to get her 20-year-old son admitted to Pravara Medical College in Ahmednagar.
Sahani gave them the cash, but soon realised that she had been duped. She then filed a complaint with the Cuffe Parade police station. “We arrested Khan from his office on charges of cheating and breach of trust,” said inspector Vilas Bhole from the Cuffe Parade police station.
“The accused had different rates for getting admissions in different streams. For medical stream they charged around Rs 15 lakh, for commerce it was anything between Rs 3 to 4 lakh,” said the police.
