In an attempt to help first-timers, particularly women, prepare for the marathon and to spread awareness about injury-free running, nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar is organising a free workshop on November 6 at Ruia College, Matunga.

The five-hour workshop, open to all, will cover a range of issues related to running, including how to prepare, how to run smoothly, how to fuel your run, and how to recover.

A three-member panel of Diwekar, Iyengar yoga teacher Zubin Zarthoshtimanesh and orthopedic surgeon and sports fitness specialist Dr Dilip Nadkarni will chair the sessions.

Diwekar will also chair a special, two-hour workshop for women runners.

“The main reason we are doing this workshop is because every year, people begin preparing for the marathon post-Diwali with a sense of guilt at having eaten their hearts out,” says Diwekar. “This kind of mindless running can result in injuries, which then cause them to give up the running. We’re hoping this workshop will help spread the word on how to prepare right for the marathon.”

Nadkarni will discuss strategies for greater flexibility and strength-building.

The focus on women, says Diwekar, is because this is a neglected group, particularly mothers. “We also want the next generation to grow up watching their mothers work out,” says the nutritionist. “Otherwise, you’re just going to have another generation rife with teenage obesity.”
