AN Roy is state top cop

Four months before he is set to retire, Anami Narayan Roy has been re-appointed as the DGP on Friday. Roy, who is the seniormost IPS officer in the state, replaces S S Virk, who retired on October 31, reports HT Correspondent.

Four months before he is set to retire, Anami Narayan Roy has been re-appointed as the Director General of Police (DGP) on Friday. Roy, who is the seniormost IPS officer in the state, replaces S S Virk, who retired on October 31.

Following Virk’s retirement, Roy, who was the Director General of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), was serving as the acting DGP.

At present there are two DGs in Maharashtra against the sanctioned strength of four – the other one being Hasan Gafoor, managing director of Maharashtra State Police Housing and Welfare Corporation Ltd.

The post of DG, Special Operations has been lying vacant following the retirement of Jayant Umranikar, while the post of DG, Civil Defence and Home Guard has been down-graded. Roy is scheduled to retire in May this year.

Roy’s appointed was cleared after a three-member committee submitted its recommendations to Chief Minister Ashok Chavan.

Roy was first appointed as the DGP in March 2008. However, on February 5, 2009, Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice S.A. Bobde cancelled his appointment on technical grounds. Roy and the state had challenged the High Court order, but an order by the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) set aside his appointment as the DGP. The court had specified that its judgement did not reflect on the merit of Roy or of the other officers in the fray.
