“Our education system must produce empowered youths who can pull the country up the ladder and not be a baggage,” said Anil Kakodkar, professor, Homi Bhabha Chair, Department of Atomic Energy.

Kakodkar, the former chairman of Atomic Energy Commission, was conferred the Doctor of Science at the fourth convocation of Padmashree Dr D.Y. Patil University on Thursday.
“We have a unique opportunity of empowering nearly half of Indian population that would be of young capable age at a time when most of the people in developed countries would get past their productive age,” he added.
Tripura Governor Padmash-ree Dr D.Y. Patil, the founder chancellor of the university, presided over the function.
Former NABARD chairman Y.S.P. Thorat was conferred the Doctor of Literature at the ceremony.
“The eminent personalities awarded the doctorates this year have had outstanding careers and have set very high standards in their fields. They are an inspiration to the youth for what they have done for our country,” said university Chancellor Vijay Patil.
More than 1,100 graduates were conferred their degrees.
