Apex committee will meet to improve enrolment process

After receiving several complaints about the inconvenience citizens faced at the Unique Identification (UID) registration centres, state chief secretary Ratnakar Gaikwad has called an apex committee meeting, which includes nine state secretaries and two central government officers on Thursday.

Senior officials from Mumbai, Thane and Pune civic bodies and non-state registrars such as banks and authorities from the state’s directorate of information technology (DIT) have also been called.

The UID registration process is currently on across the state. Recently, the Hindustan Times reported about various flaws and violations observed at the UID centres in the city.

Last week, the state’s DIT authorities paid a surprise visit to UID centres and observed violations such as outsourcing of work.

“This is a major project with many bodies involved. Therefore, this meeting is to decide and understand each other’s role. We will discuss synchronised planning, implementation of strategies, conceptual clearance, data package and transfer. The violations and outsourcing observed at the centres will also be discussed so that action can be taken against it,” said Dr Santosh Bhogale, under secretary, Directorate IT.
