Ganga Education Society, Kolhapur, has decided to close down its Ayurvedic medical college, putting the future of 76 students in jeopardy, after the Bombay high court said they should only function if they had the requisite permissions to impart quality education.
Last week, the society’s counsel Dilip Bodake informed the division bench of justice Abhay Oka and justice Gautam Patel that the institution wanted to withdraw unconditionally all petitions it had filed.
The petitions challenged orders passed by AYUSH, the department of Indian systems of medicine and homoeopathy in union health ministry in 2011 and 2012, restraining it from admitting students and a recent communication from the Maharashtra University of Health Science (MUHS) disallowing students of the society’s BAMS courses from appearing for their next semester examination.
The court had, last week, suggested that it was better for the society to close down the college, set the clock back and restart it only after securing all requisite governmental permissions and approvals.
