Taking into account the increasing number of road accidents involving its drivers, the BrihanMumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) Undertaking has decided to expedite the installation of speed governors in its fleet of 4,700 buses.
Sunday saw two fatal accidents in the city. While 17-year-old cyclist Shubham Shinde was killed by BEST bus near Portuguese church in Dadar, 21-year old motorcyclist Nian Rodrigues was knocked down by a bus at the Mitha Chowk bus stop. In both cases, the victims were declared dead before on arrival at the hospitals.
A speed governor is a speed-limiting device that either acts on the fuel supply line or the accelerator to restrict a vehicle to a specified speed. In this case, the speed governor will restrict the single-decker bus to 65 kmph and a double-decker to 55 kmph.
“We take accidents involving our buses very seriously. Several steps are being taken to curb them, such as installing speed governors, increasing the vigilance on drivers, bringing in stricter rules and issuing suspension orders for even small scratches,” said a senior BEST official, requesting anonymity.
The BEST started installing speed governors in a phased manner last month. So far it has fixed them in 10 buses from the Dharavi and Colaba depots. In the first six months, 1,000 new buses will be fitted with speed governors and their performance will be studied before all buses are fixed with them.
