An alleged attempt to seek the release of a gangster from the sessions court on Friday seemed to have been foiled with the arrest of three armed men.

Sources in the crime branch said the trio, whose names were not disclosed, were on the city civil and sessions court premises at Fort to make an attempt to release, Devendra Jagtap, a top aide of underworld gangster Bharat Nepali. The three included Jagtap’s brother, who had been arrested over the murder of lawyer Shahid Azmi.
Tipped off about the plan, the crime branch officials laid a trap. Jagtap was to appear in the court for the trial of Azmi’s murder case. At around 3 pm, when the men tried to enter the court room, the police arrested them. Some revolvers with live rounds have been recovered from them.
Joint commissioner of police, crime, Himanshu Roy, said: “A group of criminals had come to secure the release of an undertrial at the court. Our action prevented them from doing so.”
