The civic body has finally sprung into action to tackle the menace of drinking water contamination, dispatching teams to four spots in the city to get to the root of the problem.

A day after the Hindustan Times reported how latest civic figures showed an average 30 people admitted to civic hospitals across the city every single day for gastroenteritis this month alone, the civic body announced a slew of measures to stem the spread of the disease.

In addition to sending out the teams, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will also conduct joint coordination meetings with the health department in a fortnight. These will be held to specifically earmark more steps to avoid a repeat of the current situation, where water contamination is taking a toll on people’s health.

Additional municipal commissioner Rajiv Jalota told HT, “I have already instructed my officials to visit the spots named in your newspaper report and collect samples and attend to those complaints. The immediate priority is to identify the cause of these complaints, and ensure all related issues are resolved.”

Jalota said, “Our clean water drive will also involve the hydraulic engineer’s department and the health department to tackle contamination. We are also trying to work out systems where citizens can interact with us on water contamination complaints.”
