On Wednesday, Hindustan Times published a report on the number of potholes on city roads – 6,000 across 1,100 locations – since the start of the monsoon.

Civic officials hope to fill all potholes, provided the dry spell continues for the next four to five days. On Wednesday, work began on the Kavi Keshavsut flyover on Tulsi Pipe Road, Dadar (west), one of the six pothole-ridden spots that HT had published a photo of.

“Work has also started on Dadar TT flyover, and the Parel and Byculla bridges,” said Satish Badwe, chief engineer, road and bridges.

“We will do the pothole-filling work on a war-footing. We need a dry spell of four to five days,” said Aseem Gupta, additional municipal commissioner said.

The Congress, the opposition party in the BMC, criticised the state of the roads. “Work has started, but the overall road condition is bad,” said Sameer Desai, Congress corporator from Goregaon, adding that his party would raise the issue at the civic general body meeting on Thursday.

The civic body has already spent Rs26 crore of the allocated Rs40 crore on pre-monsoon road repair work. “If needed, the pothole repair budget will be raised,” Gupta said.
