A day after a six-month-old girl and her mother were crushed under a tree at Nariman Point, the Brihanmumbai Muni-cipal Corporation (BMC) decided to conduct a survey of all trees, which have been listed as ‘unhealthy’ in the city. A team of experts will be appointed to conduct the survey, a first for the city.

The team will recommend necessary measures that need to be taken to avoid a repeat of Sunday night’s incident.
“At present, we have no way to find out, which tree is on the brink of collapse and which isn’t. The survey will give us a better idea,” said Aseem Gupta, additional municipal commissioner, adding that experts from the field of arboriculture and horticulture would be invited.
HT had, last year, published a series of reports about the BMC’s ineffective and unscientific method of pruning trees, which resulted in tree collapses. Last year, 4 persons were killed and several others injured in tree collapse incidents across the city.
