The bodies of nine Pakistani terrorists who carried out the the brazen 26/11 attacks were “secretly” buried in January, the Maharashtra government revealed on Tuesday.
“I would like to inform the House that the bodies of the nine terrorists have been buried at a [secret] location in January,” Home Minister R.R. Patil said in the legislative Council on Tuesday, when he was replying to a discussion on law and order in the state.
Patil said that the burial was conducted in a “dignified” manner and 30 to 40 policemen were involved. “There have been a lot of cases of news leaks from the (police) force to the media,” Patil said. “I wanted to check if my officers could keep this news to themselves.”
The bodies had been preserved in the morgue at J.J. Hospital, Byculla, since November 2008.
No one had claimed the bodies and local Muslim organisations did not want them buried in the community’s graveyards.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime), Deven Bharati, who is part of the 26/11 probe, confirmed that the terrorists’ bodies had been buried in January. He, however, refused to disclose where and when the burial took place.
Forensic expert, Dr Sailesh Mohite, said there was no use for the terrorists’ bodies in medical colleges. “Usually, bodies of people who have died due to natural causes are used (in medical colleges),” said Dr Mohite, who heads the forensic medicine department at Nair Hospital. “The terrorists’ bodies must be having many wounds and parts would be charred. An autopsy was also performed on them.”

{{/usCountry}}Patil, meanwhile, also condemned Tuesday’s Naxal attack at Dantewada, Chhattisgarh. He spoke about the situation in Maharashtra saying 265 civilans and 121 policemen have been killed in Naxal violence.
