Siyaram Yadav, 35, was found in a 20-feet deep pit dug by civic contractor RP Shah to lay new sewage line on BR Road near Indraprasth hotel at Mulund on Wednesday. Yadav was missing for two days.

On Thursday, Aseem Gupta additional municipal commissioner ordered an inquiry into the matter.

SR Hasnale, assistant municipal commissioner of T ward, said: “I have initiated the inquiry and will submit the report to my senior official.”

Prakash Landge, senior police inspector of Mulund police station, said: “We have booked the contractor for causing death due to negligence under section 304 (A) of the Indian Penal Code.”

“He has got severe injury on head might be the reason of death,” said BMC sources.

BMC officials said the pit was dug for the last one month and the work of laying a new sewage line was in progress. “If needed, we will amend a policy about the safety measures,” said Gupta.
