The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) searches at premises of senior IAS officer and former city civic chief Jairaj Phatak, in connection with the Adarsh scam, were conducted a day after the CBI obtained approval from the Centre under the Delhi Special Police Establishment (DSPE) Act, 1946, to prosecute Phatak.
The CBI had registered an FIR in the Adarsh scam on January 29, but the agency was awaiting sanction for Phatak’s prosecution, as he was a joint secretary rank officer.
According to sources, the CBI team also questioned Jairaj Phatak’s son, Kanishk, when they searched flat number six of Shanti Niketan building at Marine Drive, where he lives with his family. Kanishk is among the 103 members who own an apartment in Adarsh society.
“He (Kanishk) told us that he works with a construction company as finance manager and draws a salary of Rs1.5 lakh per month, but we suspect it,” said a senior CBI official on condition of anonymity. CBI sources said that Kanishk claimed to pay a monthly rent of Rs50,000 for the flat at Shanti Niketan.
The official added that the agency has also learnt of four lockers that are in the name of Phatak’s wife and his daughter-in-law. “There are three lockers in Mumbai, two of which are in his wife’s name, and a locker in New Delhi also in his wife’s name,” said the official. The CBI has also learnt about fixed deposits worth Rs50 lakh. “Phatak and his family members were also found in possession of 22 bank accounts in different banks,” said the official.
