Exactly a year after 22-year-old Altaf Shaikh was allegedly killed due to police torture, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is all set to file a charge sheet in the case by September 30 after seeking extension of time from the Bombay High Court on two occasions.
A senior CBI official said, “As per the directions of the high Court, we (CBI) will be filing the charge sheet,” said the official. The official added: “We have regularly been submitting progress reports of our investigation to the high court. Now since the investigation is over, we will follow high court direction.”
Altaf’s death had come under the scanner of the high court after his mother, Mehrunissa Shaikh, filed a petition alleging that her son was killed in police custody.
She had sought action against the policemen responsible for her son’s death.
On October 26, the high court had transferred the investigation to the CBI after finding prima facie that the police were responsible for Altaf’s death.
The court had directed the CBI to lodge an offence against the concerned police officers and people who conducted the inquest panchanama.
The high court had transferred investigation to the CBI observing: “We neither trust the executive magistrate nor the DCB, CID, to conduct a fair inquiry.”
