CBSE Class 12 results: Maharashtra has little to cheer

Not a single student from Mumbai made it to the list of the country’s top-seven high scorers released by the CBSE – a huge letdown compared to Mumbai’s phenomenal showing in the Indian School Certificate (ISC) exams.

The Class 12 Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) results have been disappointing, with the state registering the lowest pass percentage in the past three years.

Not a single student from Mumbai made it to the list of the country’s top-seven high scorers released by the CBSE – a huge letdown compared to Mumbai’s phenomenal showing in the Indian School Certificate (ISC) exams.

However, the city had something to cheer, with two students with special needs scoring more than 90%. Alice Dorine Alva from Don Bosco Senior Secondary School, Nerul, and Meet Sakharia from Ram Ratna Vidya Mandir, Thane, made it to the national merit list for students from the special category.

Alva, who is visually impaired, secured 94%, without joining any coaching class. “She wants to pursue bachelors of science or take up engineering,” said her father.

Sakaria, who suffers from dyslexia, secured 90.2%.

The pass percentage for Maharashtra slumped to 91.59% this year, with 13,378 students clearing the exams, out of 14, 608 students. It stood at 93.5% in 2014 and 92.77% in 2012. In 2013, the pass rate had increased to 93.9%.

The highest scores in the city were around 98%, lower than the national highest of 99.2%.

Most of the schools saw top scores dip. The highest scorer at Balbharti School, Airoli, secured 95.6% this year, while it was 97.6% last year. “The results have been disappointing,” said Ganesh Parmeshwaran, principal of the school. “Though all our students secured the first division, the overall result was poorer than what we had expected.”

On the other hand, some schools had a better showing. “Our average marks in most subjects increased,” said Jayashree Khandekar, principal, New Horizons School, New Panvel.
