"In cases where we have a tip-off that a particular person was involved in the Azad Maidan violence, we are first checking the mobile phone tower records. If the tower location shows that the person was in the area, we will interrogate him further," said an officer who did not wish to be named. The officer added that if the mobile phone tower location suggests that the suspect was at some other spot, his involvement is ruled out.

Police have also been checking mobile phones of certain suspects for any evidence of inflammatory videos or pictures, he added. When police come across any such material, they delete the same, and issue a stern warning to the person. The officer said that in most cases, the suspects have told them that they saw the video on a popular social networking site and passed it forward.
