Census officers appeal for help, top performers to be honoured

“The only difficulty we face is many people don’t know their father or mother’s date or place of birth,” said Uttam Bandgar, an enumerator.

“Only if we fill these details in the enumeration form will the census programme be completed on time,” said Manisha Mhaiskar, additional principal census officer.

The BMC has decided to felicitate the fastest 100 enumerators in the city, five who complete their enumeration in each administrative ward, and five working in vulnerable areas such as Kamathipura, Darukhana and the Sonapur area in Bhandup.

“It will encourage enumerators to complete the census on schedule,” said Mhaiskar.

The receipt issued for the National Population Register, a pink coloured slip, must be preserved by the family for the biometry and photography needed to obtain a Unique Identification Number (UIN).

Census 2011 kicked off in the city on May 1.

It will be conducted in two phases: The first phase comprises house listing and housing census, along with the creation of the National Population Register until June 15.

Phase 2 consists of the actual population enumeration, from February 9 to 28, 2011.
