As the economic slowdown and slump in the real estate market hit the ambitious Dharavi makeover project, the state government is now considering various options to put it on the fast track.

At a meeting on Monday, Chief Minister Ashok Chavan asked the officials involved in the Dharavi makeover project to work out the details for changing the plan.

The plan includes splitting the current five sectors of Dharavi into several sub-zones and handing them over to local builders for redevelopment.

Officials were tightlipped over what transpired in the meeting but sources said Chavan was angry over the slow pace of the work.

He was also reportedly unhappy that only seven of the 19 developers were left in the fray.

Chavan instructed the officials to rope in Indian developers instead of international ones since the latter were in two minds whether the project would be profitable or not, the sources said.

He also discussed the problem arising out of a municipal survey in Dharavi that revealed that only 37 per cent of a particular block was found eligible for free houses.

Now, a fresh survey has been planned.
