“Our investigation is on. We hope to wrap up our work in a month’s time and file a charge sheet in the case,” said Vineet Agarwal, additional commissioner of police, central region.

On March 9, the Hindustan Times had reported on the delay in filing the charge sheet in the case against Khan, which was registered with the Worli police in December 2008. When asked about the reason for this delay, Agarwal had said he would expedite the investigation so as to ensure timely filing of the charge sheet.

On Monday, Agarwal said that officers from the Worli police station have been sent to the passport offices at Hyderabad and Patna to collect information and documents relevant to the case against Ali.

The Worli police had arrested Khan on December 15, 2008, for forgery, cheating and procuring fake passports. The case was registered in February that year. Khan was later released on bail. The police had said that Khan had lost his original passport, issued by the regional passport office at Hyderabad in 2006, when he was in England. The Indian High Commission’s office gave him a fresh passport valid for a year.

Khan travelled to Switzerland and Canada with that passport before finally applying for a new passport at Pune. The police found that Khan had two other passports, one issued in Mumbai and the other at Patna.

Both were allegedly procured by submitting two sets of documents. The law does not allow one person to hold more than one passport.
