CID to probe murder covered up as accident

The Bombay High Court has sought names of three to four senior officials from the State Criminal Investigation Department to investigate an alleged brutal murder of a 22-year-old, whose death was being portrayed as an accident by Thane Rural Police.

The division bench of Justice B.H. Marlapalle and Justice Roshan Dalvi referred to a second opinion by the medical board of Sir JJ Group of Hospitals about the cause of victim Vinod Jadhav's death and arrived at the conclusion that it was a murder.

Jadhav, the youngest son of a fisherman from Khardi village in Shahapur tehsil at Thane was killed on the Mumbai-Pune highway on May 8, 2008.

Being the son of a chamar, he was allegedly killed for having an affair with an upper class girl.

The local police, however, portrayed it as an accidental death and refused to register an FIR against the suspects named by Jadhav's family.

According to the petition, members of the girl's family had beaten and threatened to kill Jadhav on numerous occasions.

The post-mortem report revealed Jadhav's death was not accidental but a brutal murder.

"There are sharp injuries on the private parts of the deceased," the judge said.

"It can't be a truck accident."
