City celebrates Eid with fervour and firni

“Till last year, I received only money as ‘Eidi’ amounting to a few thousands. Next year onwards, I will have to help my mother prepare the ‘daawat’,” said Shaikh, who celebrated Eid after spending a month in prayer and fasting during the holy month of Ramzan.

Warm embraces and cries of ‘Eid Mubarak’ filled the air after Muslims spotted the “Eid ka chand” on Tuesday night.

“After a month of restraint, we celebrated a new beginning. The women in my family spent most of the day preparing the grand feast, while relatives and close friends came home to share their joy,” said Naushad Hussain, a resident of Chembur.

Eid-ul-fitr marks the culmination of the holy month, Ramadan. While the Dawoodi Bohras celebrated Eid on Tuesday, the others will be relishing the Eid delicacies comprising ‘sheer khurma’ and ‘biryani’ on Wednesday.

While heavy rain dampened shopping plans of most city-based Muslims during the weekend, Abdul Sheikh, 46, remained unaffected. “We begin preparations a week in advance. It is the biggest day for us. We never keep it for the last moment,” said Sheikh.
