City’s second largest water reservoir ready

The first one was the Azad maidan underground reservoir built in 1997, which took 10 years for completion. The construction of the new reservoir was started in 2006-7 and completed in 2011 at the cost of Rs 19 crore. It has a storage capacity of 10 million litres.

“Before commissioning the reservoir in full swing, we have to conduct trial supply at least for 8-10 days to get an idea about maintaining pressure, as the distribution line can burst with imbalance in pressure,” said a civic official from water department.

The reservoir would cover the water supply to Nagpada, Khetwadi, Kamathipura area, Kumbharwada area and part of Byculla, catering to 1 to 1.25 lakh population. Currently, these areas get water supply from Malabar Hill and Babula Tank reservoirs with very low pressure.

The city has 26 reservoirs, which receive treated water from the Bhandup treatment plant. Post independence, the civic body constructed eight reservoirs.
